Something about the terms “PBS” and “dominatrix” doesn’t always connect in television viewers’ minds. But leather-and-whip aficionados won’t find a more memorable practitioner anywhere on TV this Sunday, or almost any other Sunday, than Irene Adler, played by Lara Pulver in the second season opener of “Sherlock” at 9 p.m. on PBS’ “Masterpiece Mystery.” So what’s happening here? Are PBS and Pulver, who has done much of her previous work in musicals like “Parade,” suggesting even viewers of traditionally staid PBS can tap an inner dominatrix? “Oh,” Pulver replies, “don’t we all have one?” Whatever secrets the rest of us may harbor, Irene Adler doesn’t start off by hiding much. She makes her entrance wearing bright red lipstick, stylish black shoes and not a whole lot else.
It makes for a fast-moving, high-tech chess match in which Pulver says the real challenge was one that goes back to the first dramas of the ancient Greeks: How to reflect the characters’ true feelings without betraying their facades of confident indifference. “She totally knocks him off his compass,” says Pulver. “Yet at the same time she’s never felt so vulnerable.” It makes for a nontraditional love story, though Pulver says she was equally attracted to the show’s lighter side. “The script was so witty,” she says. “It had so much humor and mischief.”
