Ferrous oxide, also known as iron(II) oxide or hematite, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Fe2O3. It is one of the three main oxides of iron, the other two being iron(III) oxide (Fe3O4), and ferric oxide (FeO). Ferrous oxide is a reddish-brown solid which occurs naturally as the mineral haematite. It has many industrial applications such as a pigment in paint and glass production, and for use in some cosmetics. It can also be used to absorb odors and pollutants from water. In addition, ferrous oxide can be used to create magnetic materials for use in computer memory storage devices.
